Active constituents:
The main active constituents of Gynura procumbens are astragalin, chlorogenic acid and Kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside. It also contains phytosterols (β-sitosterol and stigmasterol), sterol glycosides (3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl β-sitosterol, 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl stigmasterol), nonadecane, phytyl valerate, adenosine, kaempferol-3-O-neohesperidoside, methyl hexa- decanoate, methyl 9-octadecenoate, 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone, stigmasterol acetate, quercetin-O-caffeoylquinic acid, 1, 2-bisdodecanoyl-3-α-O-D-glucopyranosyl-Sn-glycerol.

Pharmacological actions:
1. Anti-diabetic action
The ethanol extract of Gynura procumbens was reported to have anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemic activities in diabetic rats. The extract of Gynura procumbens leaves may have biguanide-like activity. The extract showed similar effect to metformin by improving glucose tolerance (OGTT) in STZ-induced diabetic rats. The methanol extract and n-butanol fraction exerted a significant hypoglycemic effect when administered orally to streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The leaf extract of G. procumbens significantly reverses the adverse effects of elevated accumulation of intracellular glucose.

2. Anti-hypertensive action
Gynura procumbens extract (GPE) administered rats had significantly lower serum lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase and increased nitric oxide, a known vasodilator and decreased the systolic & diastolic blood pressure. Glycoconjugated or peptidal substances found in GPE that exhibit an inhibitory effect on ACE. It is useful for prevention and treatment of hypertension through increasing nitric oxide production in blood vessels.

Dosage:
Adult – one to two capsules two to three times daily half-an-hour before meal

Side effect:
Well tolerated in recommended dose.
